Preparing for

Help Your Guidance Counselor Help YOU!

1. Visit early and often. Get to know your counselor during you high school freshman year. Check back with him or her at least once a year to discuss courses, activities, college plans and career aspirations.

2. Let your counselor get to know you. Greet them and remind them of your name as often as you can. The better your counselor knows you, the more he or she will be able to offer advice specific to your situation.

3. Thank them. Be sure to thank your counselors for their help. Send a written thank you note after receiving your letter of recommendation.

4. Prepare for meetings. Know the issues you want help with and compile a list of questions you want answered.

5. Pay attention. Even if you don't agree with what he or she says, listen closely and make your own decision.

6. Provide materials well before the due date. Give your counselor all forms (report cards, recommendation, etc.) early and all at once, if possible. Be sure to include information about deadlines. Include stamped envelopes to mail your forms.

7. Notify your counselor about your progress . Let them know if you are accepted by your prospective university/college. If you don't get in, they may be able to advise you about your next step.
