Walden's Relationship with Downtown

 

Head-Start: on a daily basis students from Walden are involved in the teaching of children attending Head-Start. They read, write and plan lessons.

 

Annual Food Drive: Walden students collected and donated over 10,000 pounds of food to the Racine County Food Bank in 2003-2004.

 

Make a Difference Day: middle school students are involved in helping the community of Racine. They clean and fix up areas in our neighborhood, help programs such as Head-start, visit elder homes, work with kids at Winslow, and recently volunteered to help with North Beach Playground Project. Past projects are the: skateboard park, historical museum, Safe Haven, Toys for Tots, Lt. Lucks Manor, and local child care centers.

 

Racine Art Museum (RAM): Walden is the neighborhood school for the new museum. We are cultivating a relationship with the museum to collaborate with art education. Walden students and staff raised money to build the new museum.

 

Historical Museum: Walking field trips to view exhibits and recently became their new student evaluators

.

Public Library: Walden has also been involved in Racine Reads including Jeffrey Canada's book, "First, Stick, Knife, Gun".

 

Racine Zoo: we utilize the zoo for field trips to learn about animals and have fun (science).

 

North Beach: every year our new 6th Grades get to know each other at North Beach eating and playing games during a social mixer.

 

Sam Meyers Park: Science environments/water testing and writing activities for English classes.

 

Architecture (history, art and photography): student immersion in the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Many of these buildings are within walking distance of our school.

 

Golden Rondelle: is used for meetings and workshops.

 

Racine Journal Times: elective class is taught on newspapers and publishing.

 

Bowling: There are after school activities at Hillside during socials.

 

YMCA / YWCA: there are exhibits at the Presbyterian Church on violence.

 

City Hall:

 

Police and Fire: helping Cops-'n'-Kids.

 

Root River and PR Pathway:

 

Cedar Band Park Garden:

 

Festival Hall: students visit the Technology Exhibit and Festival of Trees. Walden's band, choir, home groups visit these events.

 

Downtown Cats / Dogs: Walden students enter annually and have been chosen to exhibit their work.

 

Empty Bowls: Walden ceramic students make and donate bowls in collaboration with Homeward Bound of Racine County.

 

Choir: performs downtown.

 

Gateway: 8th Grade Volunteer Expo; students walk to this event.

 

Home Groups: are like families and bond by going to lunches in the vicinity of downtown.
