Eco-Friendly Makeover Contest

Extreme Makeover Home Edition plans to do an "eco-friendly" makeover on a school. We would like lots of applications for Walden as this prize of $250,000 would really help us in our quest to become a Green School and to refurbish our elderly digs.

Essays must be 250 words or less and received by May 18, 2008. Visit the website educatetoescape.com to submit your entry and answer a series of survey questions.

  • School: Walden III Middle and High School
  • Principal: Bob Holzem
  • City, State, Zip: Racine, WI 53403
  • School Phone: 262-664-6250
  • Size: 500-1000 students
  • School Type: Public
  • Grade Levels: Other (6th-12th)

Some information you might find helpful in writing an essay: 1) we want to stay in the building with our ties to the community and our role as an anchor in a challenged neighborhood; 2) parts of the building were built in the 1860s; 3) the west wing is in the bottom 5% for energy efficiency; and 4) we already have Green School status, but we have a long way to go to fulfill our mission and help other schools become green.

Scrip Tips for Apr. 23

Next order due Apr. 25, delivery on May 2

It's not too soon to be thinking of Mother's Day, which is Sunday, May 11th. Scrip makes a great gift for that special Mom, Grandma, Mother-in-Law, Mom-to-Be, or other favorite "second mother" in your life. Orders placed by Friday, May 2nd will arrive in time for Mother's Day.

If you're planning to take Mom out so she doesn't have to cook on Mother's Day, you can use scrip and earn extra money for Walden out at the same time. We offer scrip for Chancery ($5), Hobnob ($50), Olive Garden ($25), Outback Steak House ($25), PF Changs ($25), Rainforest Cafe ($25), Applebee's ($25), or Cheesecake Factory ($25), just to name a few. Check www.glscrip.com, click on Retailer List and you can search by name or select retailer type (dining - fine or casual) to see if scrip is available for mom's favorite restaurant.

Other Mother's Day gift ideas include Bath & Body Works ($10/$25), Williams Sonoma/Pottery Barn ($25), Crate & Barrel ($25/$100), Barnes & Noble ($10/$25/$100), Boston Store ($25/$100), Kay Jewelers ($50) and even Motherhood Maternity ($25). There are hundreds of retailers to choose from—Mom's favorite store is sure to be offered, and she'll be happy to know she's helping the school while she's shopping.

If you really want to pamper mom, scrip is available for the Grand Geneva Resort at Lake Geneva ($25), the Ritz-Carlton Hotels ($50), and for the Marriott ($50/$100) and Hyatt Hotel ($25/$100) chains. There are many more travel options listed at www.glscrip.com under Retailers/Travel.

If you're all out of ideas, you can never go wrong sending flowers. We can get scrip for 1-800 Flowers ($25) and Walden gets a little extra profit at no cost to you.

This week's scrip orders are due in the scrip mail box located in the school office by 9:00 AM on Friday, April 25th, with delivery no later than during homegroup on Friday, May 2nd.
