Hey Dude! Where's My School

What is Walden III?

Walden III is a public magnet school located in Racine's central city at 1012 Center Street. We have a multi-ethnic population of approximately 500 students in grades 6-12. We are named after Henry David Thoreau's classic, Walden, and we encourage young adults to hear the beat of a different drummer. Thoreau also wrote, "It is time for uncommon schools . . . "

How did Walden III get its name?

Walden III's name was selected by the students who wanted to emphasize the difference of their school. Not wishing to use Thoreau's Walden or Skinner's Walden Two, the students chose Walden III. The choice, you may wish to know when the school was started in 1972, was between Walden III and Frank Zappa High School.
